Mission Statement – Second Chance Strategies

Second Chance Strategies is dedicated to providing education, fostering civic engagement, and addressing political affairs that impact our community. We are committed to creating a supportive environment where every member of the second-chance community—and their advocates—can access the tools, knowledge, and pathways necessary for personal growth and successful social reintegration. We strive to bridge the gap between directly impacted individuals and policymakers by advocating for policies that promote rehabilitation, reintegration, and equal opportunities for justice-involved people. Through active engagement with lawmakers, we champion evidence-based policies that reduce recidivism, strengthen recovery, and address the root causes of substance use disorders.

Our Vision for Healing, Hope, and Lasting Recovery

Second Chance Strategies envisions a future where people impacted by incarceration and substance use are recognized as leaders, not liabilities. We see communities where recovery is guided by integrity, reintegration is supported by opportunity, and directly impacted individuals have real pathways to influence policy, shape systems, and build meaningful lives. Our vision is a Kentucky—and a nation—where second chances lead to leadership, dignity, and lasting change.

Our History

Second Chance Strategies was established in 2023 with a clear intention: to build a nonprofit that is thoughtful, intentional, and truly responsive to the needs of people most impacted by incarceration and substance use disorder. Rather than rushing to program delivery, the organization spent its early years listening, learning, and shaping a vision grounded in lived experience, community voice, and evidence-based solutions. This intentional approach allowed Second Chance Strategies to define its role as a bridge between directly impacted communities and the systems that shape their lives—policy, recovery services, workforce pathways, and civic engagement. In 2025, Second Chance Strategies began its public-facing work by launching education-centered initiatives focused on awareness, dialogue, and leadership development. These early efforts laid the foundation for the organization’s flagship initiative, the Kentucky Reintegration Leadership Project, designed to cultivate ethical, informed, and empowered leaders across the Commonwealth. Today, Second Chance Strategies is growing into a statewide platform for education, advocacy, and leadership—committed to ensuring that those most impacted are not only included in the conversation, but positioned to lead it.

Our Values

Lived Experience as Leadership: We believe those most impacted by incarceration and substance use hold essential knowledge and insight. Lived experience is not a barrier—it is a qualification.

Equity & Opportunity: We work to dismantle barriers that prevent justice-impacted individuals from accessing education, employment, leadership, and civic participation.

Ethical Recovery: We promote recovery practices rooted in integrity, accountability, professionalism, and respect for individual dignity.

Collaboration Over Isolation: Lasting change happens when communities, service providers, policymakers, and directly impacted leaders work together—not in silos.

Civic Engagement & Voice: We believe people in recovery and reintegration deserve a seat at the table. Policy decisions should be shaped by those who live with their impact.

Prevention & Evidence-Based Policy: We champion solutions that reduce recidivism, prevent harm, and address root causes—guided by data, research, and real-world outcomes.

Hope with Accountability: We believe in second chances paired with responsibility, growth, and meaningful opportunity.
